Boat Hire & Private Boat Tours in Makarska

If you want your own pace on the Riviera, there are two ways: hire a boat and drive it yourself, or charter one with a local captain. The self-drive listings range from a few hours to a full day, and some are explicitly licence-free and include fuel. Private tours with a captain cost considerably more per booking and suit groups who want a fixed route to Brač or Hvar.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get from Split airport to Makarska?

Split airport is roughly 80 to 87 km from Makarska, a drive of around an hour on the coast road. Makarska has no airport of its own. You can rent a car, take a bus via Split bus station or book a transfer; the catalogue lists transfers in both directions, and the booking page states the exact duration.

How do I get up to the Biokovo Skywalk?

The glass platform sits at about 1,228 m inside Biokovo Nature Park, reached by a narrow, winding road of roughly 13 km from the park entrance. The park limits how many vehicles may enter per hour, which is why many visitors book a guided tour with transport: by tuk-tuk, buggy, quad, Land Rover or open car. These tours take 2.5 to 5 hours. The Skywalk is seasonal, so check the dates before you plan a winter visit.

Can I see Krka, Dubrovnik or Mostar in one day from Makarska?

Yes, guided day trips exist for all three, but they are long days: 8 to 11 hours, most of it in a vehicle. Krka is about two hours each way, Mostar about 128 km and two hours, Dubrovnik roughly 160 km and two and a half to three hours by bus including the border passage. If only one of them is on your list, a base closer to it saves hours of driving: Dubrovnik for Dubrovnik, Split or Šibenik for Krka.

What does Makarska not have?

No airport, no sandy beaches and no big-city sights. The beaches along the Riviera are pebble beaches, set against the Biokovo mountain wall. The islands of Brač and Hvar lie across the water, so island trips mean a boat ride rather than a walk from the promenade. Krka, Dubrovnik and Mostar are not around the corner either; Split and Dubrovnik have their own pages in our network.

Do I need a licence to hire a boat?

It depends on the listing. Some boat hire offers are marked licence-free in the title, others come with a captain. The booking page of each listing states which applies, together with fuel, deposit and maximum group size. Read it before you book.

Are entrance tickets included in the tours?

Not always. Several Skywalk listings say “Entry & Transfer Included” or “Skip-the-Line Ticket” in the title, others say nothing about it in the title. The same goes for Krka. The booking page lists what is included and what is not.
